Synopsis

Haunted by the sudden, tragic death of his wife, Dominic Ullis embarks on a desperate pilgrimage to Bombay, seeking not solace but oblivion. His chosen path to escape is 'Meow Meow,' a potent new drug. Thus begins a weekend-long descent into a kaleidoscopic, teeming metropolis, where Ullis navigates the dizzying contrasts between the city's opulent high-rises and its grimy, piss-stained alleys. Along the way, he encounters a bewildering array of characters, each with their own tales and secrets, none of whom Ullis—his perceptions constantly warped by grief and intoxicants—can fully trust. 'Low' is a raw, unvarnished exploration of sorrow, addiction, and the quest for meaning in the aftermath of devastating loss. It's a heady, heartbreaking journey through the dark underbelly of grief, pushing the protagonist to the brink of obliteration, yet hinting at the possibility of a profound, if painful, epiphany.

Critical Reception

"Jeet Thayil's 'Low' has been lauded for its audacious prose and unflinching portrayal of grief and addiction, establishing it as a significant voice in contemporary Indian literature."
