Synopsis

Set against the vibrant, yet foreboding, backdrop of Quauhnahuac, Mexico, on the fateful Day of the Dead in 1938, "Under the Volcano" plunges into the spiraling abyss of Geoffrey Firmin, a former British consul whose existence is consumed by an all-encompassing battle with alcoholism. His estranged wife, Yvonne, returns with a desperate, last-ditch hope of salvaging their fractured marriage and rescuing him from his self-destructive path, envisioning a life together far from the corrosive influences of Mexico. However, her mission is gravely complicated by the presence of Hugh, Geoffrey's half-brother, and Jacques, a childhood friend, whose past entanglements and simmering resentments threaten to derail any chance of redemption. Malcolm Lowry masterfully crafts a hallucinatory narrative, where the external festivities of the Day of the Dead mirror the internal decay of Firmin's soul, weaving a profound and devastating portrait of addiction, despair, and a doomed quest for love amidst a world teetering on the brink of global war.
