Synopsis

The tranquil, if eccentric, Scottish village of Lochdubh is shaken when the notoriously unpleasant society widow and gossip columnist, Lady Jane Winter, meets an untimely end. Her body, found floating in the river during what was supposed to be a peaceful fishing trip, quickly turns the idyllic Highland setting into a crime scene. Local Constable Hamish Macbeth, a deceptively indolent but sharp-witted lawman, finds himself facing a peculiar challenge: nearly everyone in Lady Jane's orbit had a motive to silence her. Known for her venomous pen and acidic tongue, she had a knack for uncovering and broadcasting the most damaging secrets of her acquaintances. As Hamish, often aided (and sometimes hindered) by the spirited Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, sifts through a community filled with suspects, he must navigate a labyrinth of small-town jealousies, long-held grudges, and shocking revelations to unmask a killer who could be anyone among the seemingly genteel residents of the Highlands.

Critical Reception

"As an early entry in the beloved Hamish Macbeth series, 'Death of a Gossip' cemented M. C. Beaton's reputation for crafting charming, character-driven cozy mysteries set against the atmospheric backdrop of the Scottish Highlands."

Adaptations

The Hamish Macbeth series was adapted into a popular BBC television series starring Robert Carlyle.
