Hercule Poirot and his faithful companion Captain Hastings are summoned to the luxurious Villa Geneviève on the French coast by a desperate millionaire, Paul Renauld, who fears for his life. Upon their arrival, however, they discover Renauld brutally murdered, his body found in a freshly dug grave on the adjacent golf course. The scene is perplexing, with Renauld tied up and stabbed, and a torn love letter and a fragment of a check found nearby serving as the only initial clues. As Poirot meticulously investigates the convoluted web of Renauld's past, which includes an enigmatic wife, a mysterious mistress, and a history riddled with secrets, a second, equally baffling murder occurs. This second victim further complicates the case, forcing Poirot to untangle a complex plot of mistaken identities, concealed motives, and an intricate timeline that challenges his 'little grey cells' to their fullest. With his signature blend of psychological insight and logical deduction, Poirot must sift through a myriad of contradictory evidence and deceptive appearances to expose the cunning killer hidden amongst the seemingly respectable residents of the French Riviera.
