In a future where consciousness can be digitized and downloaded into new bodies, known as "sleeves," death is merely a temporary inconvenience for the wealthy. This technological marvel, enabled by cortical stacks, has allowed humanity to spread across the galaxy under the U.N.'s oversight. However, it has also entrenched societal divisions, making existence itself a commodity. Takeshi Kovacs, a former U.N. Envoy and elite operative known as an Envoy, finds his latest death particularly inconvenient. Awakened 180 light-years from his home world and re-sleeved into a new body in the sprawling, dilapidated Bay City (formerly San Francisco), Kovacs is offered a second chance at life, albeit a complicated one. He is hired by Laurens Bancroft, an incredibly wealthy and influential 'Meth' (Methuselah) who was murdered but resurrected from a backup of his consciousness. Bancroft claims his death was no accident and tasks Kovacs with solving his own murder. Thrown into a labyrinthine conspiracy rife with political intrigue, advanced technology, and moral ambiguity, Kovacs must navigate a society where bodies are disposable and immortality is reserved for the elite, all while battling his own past and the dark secrets of a corrupted future.
