Synopsis

Peter Robinson's "Piece of My Heart" masterfully weaves a dual-timeline narrative, delving into the dark underbelly of the music industry across generations. The story begins in 1969 Yorkshire, where the idyllic aftermath of an outdoor rock concert is shattered by the discovery of a young woman's brutally murdered body. Detective Stanley Chadwick, a stern, war-hardened veteran with little patience for the counter-culture, must navigate a world of long-haired hippies, drugs, and the emerging psychedelic sounds of the band The Mad Hatters, with whom the victim appears to have been connected. Decades later, in the present day, Inspector Alan Banks finds himself investigating the murder of a freelance music journalist. The journalist was probing the past of the now-iconic rock superstars, The Mad Hatters, and their long history of tragedy. Banks is compelled to unearth the hidden secrets of 1969, realizing that the present-day murder is inextricably linked to the unresolved horrors of the past, forcing him to confront a legacy of betrayal, ambition, and deadly secrets.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its intricate plotting, compelling dual timeline, and evocative portrayal of both 1960s counter-culture and contemporary crime, this novel stands as a sophisticated entry in Peter Robinson's acclaimed DCI Banks series."
