Synopsis

In the picturesque yet seemingly tranquil Yorkshire Dales, the brutal murder of Harry Steadman, a supposedly well-liked local historian, shatters the peace. His body, found half-buried beneath a dry stone wall, presents Chief Inspector Alan Banks with a perplexing case: who would want to silence such a thoughtful, dedicated man? As Banks delves into Steadman's life, he uncovers a labyrinth of disturbing secrets hidden beneath the calm façade of the quiet community. Simultaneously, young Sally Lumb, entangled in her own romantic clandestine affairs the night of the murder, embarks on her own dangerous quest for the killer, inadvertently drawing herself closer to peril. Banks must navigate a web of local gossip, unspoken resentments, and shocking revelations to expose the dark truths that ultimately led to the dedicated man's demise, proving that appearances can be fatally deceiving.
