Synopsis

In a seemingly straightforward task, Nurse Hester Latterly accompanies the fragile Mrs. Mary Farraline on a brief train trip to London. However, the journey takes a grave and unexpected turn when Mrs. Farraline dies mysteriously in the night. The situation escalates dramatically when a postmortem examination reveals a lethal dose of medicine in her system, leading to Hester being wrongly accused of murder—a crime punishable by execution. Desperate to save her, the renowned detective William Monk takes on the daunting case. He must delve into the intricate and often ruthless world of the prominent Farraline clan, an aristocratic family whose cool composure and powerful social standing make them appear unassailable. Monk's investigation uncovers a labyrinth of secrets, betrayals, and Victorian society's rigid class structures, as he races against time to expose the true killer and prevent Hester from facing the gallows.
