Synopsis

In the murky, gas-lit streets of Victorian London, the social elite are rocked by a scandal that threatens to unravel the fabric of high society. General Thaddeus Carlyon, a figure of significant influence, meets an untimely end at what should have been a festive dinner party. The shock deepens when his wife, the elegant and composed Clementine, startlingly confesses to his murder. However, the seemingly straightforward confession raises more questions than it answers, drawing the astute, amnesia-stricken Investigator William Monk into a labyrinth of deceit, hidden motives, and societal pressures. Alongside him, the fiercely independent nurse Hester Latterly, with her keen eye for human nature, and the brilliant barrister Oliver Rathbone, embark on a desperate quest not to prosecute, but to prove Clementine's innocence. As they delve deeper, they uncover layers of betrayal, past secrets, and a sinister truth far more complex than a simple spousal murder, challenging their perceptions of justice and morality in a rigid age.
