Synopsis

In the impoverished, fictional city of Setzuan, three gods descend to find one genuinely good person to justify humanity's continued existence. They discover Shen Teh, a kind-hearted prostitute, who offers them shelter. Grateful, they reward her with money, which she uses to buy a small tobacco shop. However, her inherent generosity and the relentless demands of her greedy, parasitic neighbors and relatives quickly threaten to bankrupt her. To survive and continue her acts of kindness, Shen Teh is forced to invent an alter ego: Shui Ta, a ruthless, pragmatic male cousin. Under Shui Ta's stern guise, she becomes a cold, calculating businesswoman, expanding her enterprise and protecting her interests, often at the expense of others. This dual identity allows Brecht to brilliantly explore the impossibility of maintaining goodness and ethical integrity within a capitalist society driven by exploitation and self-interest. The play is a profound allegorical examination of moral compromise, the corrupting influence of money, and the societal structures that compel individuals to choose between their survival and their humanity, all presented through Brecht's signature 'Epic Theatre' style, complete with songs and direct address.
