When the cantankerous, wealthy Mr. Penicuik summons his four great-nephews to London, the stakes are high: his sizable fortune hinges on the marriage of his sweet, unsophisticated great-niece, Kitty Charing. Unbeknownst to the family, Kitty is promised a generous dowry regardless, but with the expectation that she choose a husband from among her cousins. Faced with a choice between the staid, the scholarly, the dissolute, and the ridiculously handsome, Kitty, with an endearing blend of naïveté and pragmatism, devises a cunning plan. She proposes a fake engagement to Freddy Standen, the most affable but least eligible of the nephews, hoping to gain a season in London and find true love elsewhere.
