Synopsis

The Land Leviathan thrusts the bewildered Edwardian adventurer, Captain Oswald Bastable, into a breathtakingly altered 1904. Having already traversed divergent timelines, Bastable finds himself in a world profoundly shaped by an earlier, devastating Great War, leading to a global pacifist, socialist utopia. Yet, this fragile peace is on the brink of collapse. Mammoth, steam-powered land leviathans—colossal armoured vehicles—are once again mobilizing, heralding a new era of conflict orchestrated by a shadowy, messianic figure. As Bastable grapples with the philosophical implications of this seemingly benevolent but ultimately repressive world, he is drawn into a desperate struggle to avert a second, even more catastrophic war. Moorcock masterfully weaves a tale of grand-scale alternate history, questioning the nature of progress, the cost of peace, and the ever-present human urge for power, all through the eyes of a man perpetually out of time.

Critical Reception

"A pivotal work in Michael Moorcock's influential exploration of alternate history and philosophical science fiction, this novel solidified his reputation as a master of speculative fiction."
