Synopsis

In the idyllic English countryside, a pristine landscape and ancient trees face an existential threat orchestrated by the scheming Sir Giles Lynchwood. Driven by greed and a desire to rid himself of his formidable, 'capacious' wife, Lady Maude, Sir Giles plots to construct a monstrous new highway directly through their ancestral home, Handyman Hall. He enlists a rogues' gallery of accomplices: the corrupt local official Hoskins, the ruthlessly prejudiced Lord Leakham, and the obsessively orderly bureaucrat Dundridge, all eager to facilitate his destructive ambitions. However, Sir Giles gravely underestimates Lady Maude. Far from a passive victim, she mobilizes a small but fiercely determined band of local residents. What ensues is a hilariously explosive battle of wits, sabotage, and outrageous tactics, as Lady Maude and her allies employ increasingly unconventional and 'dirty' games to thwart the forces of progress and save their beloved home. Tom Sharpe's riotous satire gleefully skewers bureaucracy, environmental hypocrisy, and human folly, delivering a laugh-out-loud triumph for anyone who has ever faced an unyielding system.
