The Wilt Alternative

Synopsis

Henry Wilt, no longer merely battling his own internal fantasies, has ascended to the dubious position of Head of the reconstituted Liberal Studies Department at Fenland College. Here, he wields power without authority, immediately clashing with political bigots and reactionary bureaucrats. His domestic life offers no sanctuary, plagued by his wife Eva's fervent devotion to every 'Organic Alternative' and his quadruplets' stark, unsentimental rationality. Wilt's life takes an even more surreal turn when he becomes an unwilling participant in a terrorist siege. This crisis forces him to grapple with the profound, corrupting nature of power, a dilemma that has broken men far more capable than he. Driven by a surprising 'mental ingenuity born of his innate cowardice,' Wilt finds himself championing liberal values against the dual threats of international terrorism and the often-blundering tactics of anti-terrorist police. Amidst the escalating chaos, he renews his contentious acquaintance with Inspector Flint and endures the indignity of a bizarre psycho-political profile, all while exposing the farcical anomalies that have become society's accepted norms.

Critical Reception
