Synopsis

Barrington Jedidiah Walker, originally from Antigua, leads a seemingly conventional life in Hackney, London, with his wife Carmel, their two grown children, and a comfortable retirement. Known for his impeccable retro suits and penchant for Shakespearean quotes, Barry projects an image of quiet respectability. However, beneath this carefully constructed facade lies a profound secret: for decades, Barry has been deeply in love with his lifelong friend, Morris, who, like him, immigrated from the Caribbean to England. As Carmel's suspicions of infidelity grow, pushing their marriage to the brink, Barry faces an agonizing choice. He yearns to finally live openly with Morris, but the prospect of dismantling a lifetime of hidden desires and societal expectations is daunting. Bernardine Evaristo masterfully crafts a poignant and humorous exploration of identity, authenticity, and the intricate web of human relationships within the vibrant Caribbean community in modern Britain, asking what happens when the fear of consequences clashes with the longing for genuine connection.

Critical Reception

"Widely acclaimed for its distinctive voice, sharp wit, and incisive exploration of identity and societal pressures, "Mr. Loverman" is lauded as a brilliant and profoundly moving character study within Britain's Caribbean community."
