Synopsis

On a serene, windy summer's day in the Chilterns, Joe Rose, a rational science writer, finds his meticulously ordered life irrevocably shattered by a bizarre hot-air balloon accident. A moment of shared, desperate action to save a child inadvertently binds him to Jed Parry, a stranger who interprets their brief, traumatic encounter as a divine sign of mutual love. What begins as a seemingly random tragedy quickly spirals into a chilling psychological ordeal, as Jed's erotomanic obsession with Joe intensifies, systematically dismantling Joe's peace, his career, and, most profoundly, his relationship with his long-term partner, Clarissa. McEwan masterfully crafts a tense narrative where reason clashes with unreason, challenging the very foundations of perception and reality. As Jed's stalking becomes more invasive and terrifying, Joe's desperate attempts to prove his tormentor's madness are met with skepticism, forcing him to confront the terrifying fragility of his own sanity and the enduring, often destructive, nature of love.

Critical Reception
