Synopsis

When Flossie Rubrick, a highly influential and opinionated member of the New Zealand Parliament, mysteriously vanishes from her remote sheep farm, a perplexing cold case begins. Weeks later, her body is discovered under gruesome circumstances, cunningly concealed within a bale of her own wool. The initial investigation stalls, leaving a community bewildered and a murderer at large. Coincidentally stationed in New Zealand for counterespionage duties during wartime, the astute Scotland Yard Inspector Roderick Alleyn is persuaded to lend his formidable talents to the local authorities. Alleyn delves into the intricate web of relationships, long-held grudges, and hidden motives within the seemingly tranquil rural setting. He meticulously reconstructs the events leading to Flossie's macabre end, peeling back layers of deception to expose the truth. 'Died in the Wool' is a masterclass in classic detective fiction, where the psychological depth of its characters and the evocative New Zealand backdrop combine to present a compelling and intricately plotted whodunit.
