Synopsis

The aristocratic Lamprey family, renowned for their charm and wit, are perpetually on the brink of financial ruin. Their only hope rests on the shoulders of the immensely wealthy, yet thoroughly unpleasant, Lord Wutherwood. When Lord Wutherwood is brutally murdered, the family finds themselves surprisingly relieved by the prospect of a substantial inheritance that could save them from destitution. Scotland Yard's Inspector Roderick Alleyn is called to investigate the puzzling death. While he understands the Lampreys' newfound joy, he is determined to uncover whether their relief is innocent, or if one of them is responsible for cutting short Lord Wutherwood's life. Marsh weaves a complex web of family secrets, financial desperation, and clever red herrings, challenging Alleyn to discern motive and opportunity within a household where everyone seems to benefit from the deceased's demise. Originally published as 'Death of a Peer,' this novel is a classic example of Golden Age detective fiction.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its ingenious plotting and engaging characters, 'Surfeit of Lampreys' solidifies Ngaio Marsh's standing as a master of the mystery genre, often compared favorably to Agatha Christie."
