Synopsis

Miss Jane Fairfield, a woman of sharp intellect and unconventional charm, has cultivated a reputation for social disaster. Her outlandish gowns and even more audacious opinions are a deliberate shield, designed to keep fortune-hunters at bay and secure her substantial dowry—and her independence—from the constraints of marriage. Her strategy hinges on making herself entirely unappealing, ensuring no suitor can tolerate her for long. Into her carefully constructed chaos steps Mr. Oliver Marshall, the illegitimate son of a duke. Oliver's position in society is precarious, dependent on flawless conduct and strategic alliances to build a respectable career. He certainly doesn't need the complications of rescuing a woman like Jane, let alone falling for her. Yet, Jane's vibrant spirit, courage, and unexpected wit prove irresistible. As their paths intertwine, Oliver finds himself drawn to the very qualities Jane uses to repel others, and Jane discovers a depth of understanding in Oliver she never anticipated. Their burgeoning connection, however, threatens to unravel Oliver's tenuous social standing and expose Jane's true desires, potentially leading to the ruin of them both.
