Synopsis

Tessa Hadley's 'The Past' immerses readers in the simmering tensions of a family reunion set against the backdrop of a long, hot English summer. Four adult siblings—Harriet, Fran, Alice, and Roland—converge at their grandparents' decaying country cottage, faced with the momentous decision of renovation or sale. Beneath the seemingly idyllic surface, old resentments and new desires begin to churn. Alice arrives with Kasim, her ex-boyfriend's charismatic twenty-year-old son, whose predatory interest lands on Roland's quiet sixteen-year-old daughter, Molly. Meanwhile, Fran's children stumble upon a disturbing secret in a ruined outbuilding, shaking the foundations of their family history. The arrival of Roland's new wife, disliked by his sisters, adds another layer of friction, while the eldest, Harriet, finds her carefully constructed self-possession shattered by unexpected passion. As a cherished, bourgeois way of life teeters on the brink, the family grapples with change, loyalty, and the complex legacy of 'The Past,' leading to both profound loss and unexpected liberation.
