Synopsis

In Tessa Hadley's compelling debut, "Accidents in the Home," we are introduced to Clare Verey, a seemingly content twenty-nine-year-old mother of three, diligently crafting an idyllic suburban life. She bakes her own bread, grinds her spices, and shares a comfortable home with a devoted husband. Yet, beneath this polished surface, a profound yearning and dissatisfaction simmer. Her world is irrevocably altered when her best friend's lover enters her life, exposing the fragility of her carefully constructed happiness and igniting an insatiable desire for 'more.' The novel delves into the emotional underbelly of a modern family, intricately weaving Clare's narrative with those of her extended relatives: her mother Marian, a Dostoevsky scholar's daughter grappling with betrayal; her dreamy half-brother Toby, who views life through a camera lens; and her troubled younger half-sister Tamsin, who constructs elaborate rituals to find order amidst chaos. Hadley masterfully portrays the contemporary family as not a steadfast foundation, but a fluid, complex web of relationships, marked by marriages, divorces, and betrayals, constantly expanding and redefining itself.

Critical Reception

"Hailed as a powerful and incisive literary debut, the novel cemented Tessa Hadley's reputation as a masterful chronicler of domestic life's intricate emotional landscapes."
