Synopsis

Set against the tumultuous backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, "The Three-Body Problem" begins with physicist Ye Wenjie witnessing her father's brutal murder, an event that profoundly shapes her life and, ultimately, humanity's future. Decades later, in contemporary Beijing, nanotech engineer Wang Miao is drawn into a baffling investigation. A series of inexplicable suicides among prominent scientists, coupled with disturbing scientific anomalies, points to a larger, more sinister threat. His inquiry leads him to a mysterious virtual reality game known as "Three Body," which simulates the chaotic and deadly orbital mechanics of a distant alien world. As Wang delves deeper into the game's complex physics and the hidden motivations behind the scientists' deaths, he uncovers a vast conspiracy that spans light-years, revealing an existential crisis that threatens the very survival of humankind. Liu masterfully blends hard science, philosophical inquiry, and intricate mystery to explore humanity's place in a vast, indifferent cosmos.
