At Night All Blood Is Black

Synopsis

“At Night All Blood Is Black” plunges into the harrowing psyche of Alfa Ndiaye, a Senegalese soldier fighting for France in the brutal trenches of World War I. Bound by an unspoken brotherhood with Mademba Diop, his childhood friend, Alfa's world shatters when Mademba is mortally wounded during a charge and dies an agonizing death. Haunted by his friend's final moments and wracked by guilt for not finishing him off mercifully, Alfa descends into a chilling ritual. He begins to mutilate his German enemies on the battlefield, collecting their severed hands as macabre trophies, convinced this grisly act will bring Mademba's spirit back to him, or at least appease his own tormented soul. As Alfa's actions grow increasingly savage and his sanity frays, he transforms from a dutiful soldier into a terrifying figure, feared by friend and foe alike. Diop's hypnotic prose dissects the devastating impact of war, colonialism, and profound grief on the human mind, exploring themes of identity, humanity, and the fine line between vengeance and madness. This International Booker Prize-winning novel is a visceral, poetic, and ultimately heartbreaking exploration of a soul adrift in the maelstrom of violence.
