Synopsis

Zach Wells, a perpetually dissatisfied geologist-slash-paleobiologist specializing in a specific Grand Canyon cave, leads a meticulously ordered, albeit laconic, life. He plays chess with his daughter, banters with his wife, and largely avoids academic bureaucracy. However, his carefully constructed world begins to unravel when his daughter exhibits alarming symptoms: losing her chess prowess, developing mysterious eye problems, and experiencing memory loss. Powerless and distraught in the face of her slow deterioration, Zach's life takes an unexpected turn. He discovers a cryptic plea for help tucked into the pocket of a jacket he purchased online, sparking a desperate need to save someone, anyone. Driven by a potent cocktail of grief and a yearning for purpose, he embarks on a clandestine and quixotic rescue mission to New Mexico. "Telephone" is a profound exploration of loss, the depths of paternal love, and the unexpected ways narrative can intertwine with our most fundamental human drives.

Critical Reception

"A finalist for the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, "Telephone" solidified Percival Everett's reputation for masterfully blending intellectual rigor with raw emotional power."
