Synopsis

Owen Pick, a socially awkward man in his thirties, finds himself unwittingly embroiled in a sinister mystery when a young woman, Saffyre Maddox, vanishes from his London neighborhood. Already under scrutiny due to his involvement in toxic online incel forums and a prior, albeit unsubstantiated, accusation, Owen becomes the prime suspect. Meanwhile, the Fours family, newly moved in next door to Owen, appears to be the picture of domestic bliss, but beneath the surface, cracks are beginning to show. The seemingly perfect Fours parents, a child psychologist and a teacher, harbor secrets that are intricately linked to Saffyre's past and present. As the investigation into Saffyre's disappearance deepens, the interwoven lives of these characters unravel, exposing a tangled web of obsession, manipulation, and the dangerous consequences of invisibility. Lisa Jewell masterfully builds suspense, challenging perceptions of guilt and innocence while exploring themes of loneliness, voyeurism, and the hidden darkness within seemingly ordinary lives.
