Jame, a Kencyr warrior from a lineage dedicated to fighting the malevolent Perimal Darkling, stumbles into the bustling city of Tai-tastigon with no memory of the last decade. Her past is a blank slate, save for the devastating discovery of her destroyed home and deceased family. As a Kencyr, Jame is bound by codes of honesty and monotheism, yet in Tai-tastigon, she defies every tenet. She apprentices herself to the city's most infamous thief, navigates a pantheon of countless gods – even resurrecting one she inadvertently killed – and, at her inn, unwittingly unleashes sacred Kencyr dances for entertainment and destruction. Within her, Jame discovers formidable, unsettling powers and doubts that challenge her very heritage. Her quest for identity and understanding of her burgeoning abilities, coupled with the city's simmering political and religious tensions, threatens to shatter Tai-tastigon, ultimately thrusting her towards a destiny she can no longer avoid.
