Synopsis

In the third installment of Elena Ferrante's acclaimed Neapolitan Quartet, "Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay" plunges deeper into the complex, often fraught, bond between Elena Greco and Lila Cerullo as they navigate the turbulent 1970s in Italy. Elena, having escaped the confines of her working-class neighborhood, has achieved academic success and published a celebrated novel, granting her entry into intellectual circles and a life far removed from her origins. Meanwhile, Lila, despite marrying young and having a child, has defiantly shed the 'comforts' of her marriage, choosing a challenging life as a factory worker, constantly battling the rigid societal expectations and the very structure of her existence. Both women are pushing against the metaphorical walls of a prison designed to keep them in lives of ignorance and submission, striving for autonomy amidst the new opportunities emerging for women. Yet, their fates remain inextricably linked, their individual journeys serving as powerful reflections and counterpoints to each other, forming a narrative that is as much a chronicle of a friendship as it is a vivid social history of a changing nation.

Critical Reception

"This novel is hailed as a profound contribution to modern literature, masterfully weaving a rich tapestry of female friendship against the backdrop of post-war Italy, securing Elena Ferrante's status as one of the great novelists of our time."
