Synopsis

Set over five decades, Ann Patchett's "The Dutch House" is an evocative saga centered on the lives of Danny and Maeve Conroy, two siblings inextricably bound to their childhood home. Acquired by their ambitious father, Cyril Conroy, in the post-WWII economic boom, the lavish Dutch House in the Philadelphia suburbs becomes both a sanctuary and a symbol of their family's tumultuous fate. After their mother mysteriously abandons them and their father later brings home a new wife, Andrea, Danny and Maeve find themselves cruelly exiled from the only home they've ever known, stripped of their inheritance and forced back into the poverty their family had escaped. With only each other to rely on, they spend their lives circling back to the elegant mansion that haunts their memories, recounting their past from the front seat of a parked car. Patchett masterfully explores themes of family, loss, memory, and the enduring power of sibling love against the backdrop of a house that refuses to be forgotten.
