The Patron Saint of Liars

Synopsis

Ann Patchett's debut novel, "The Patron Saint of Liars," introduces readers to the atmospheric St. Elizabeth's, a remote home for unwed mothers nestled in Habit, Kentucky. Unlike the transient residents who pass through its doors, the enigmatic Rose Clinton arrives pregnant but married, and chooses to stay. Her initial intention is to surrender her child, convinced she lacks the capacity for motherhood. However, the birth of her daughter, Cecilia, transforms her resolve, compelling Rose to carve out a life within St. Elizabeth's unique community of nuns and young, expectant women. Yet, the sanctuary of the home cannot entirely shield Rose from the life she abandoned. Her carefully constructed present is continually shadowed by the secrets of her past, demanding a confrontation with who she was and who she has become. Patchett masterfully explores themes of identity, belonging, sacrifice, and the complex, often redemptive, nature of motherhood against a backdrop of quiet devotion and hidden truths.

Critical Reception

"Hailed as a 'New York Times Notable Book,' this debut novel instantly established Ann Patchett's singular talent, earning widespread critical acclaim for its grace, insight, and compassion."
