Synopsis

Willa Drake's life has been a series of defining, often challenging, moments: the unexplained vanishing of her mother in 1967, a practical marriage proposal in 1977, and the sudden onset of widowhood in 1997. Now, in 2017, with the yearning for grandchildren seemingly out of reach, Willa finds herself at a familiar crossroads of unfulfilled longing and quiet resignation. Her carefully constructed, if somewhat understated, existence is abruptly upended by a phone call – a stranger informing her that her son's estranged ex-girlfriend, the mother of her potential grandchild, has been shot in Baltimore. Driven by an inexplicable impulse, Willa abandons her stable life and flies cross-country. This seemingly rash decision plunges her into an unfamiliar world of domestic responsibility, caring for a woman she barely knows and her perceptive nine-year-old daughter. As Willa navigates the eccentricities of a vibrant Baltimore neighborhood, she is drawn into a tapestry of unexpected connections and communal rituals. Through this journey into uncharted emotional and geographical territory, Willa begins to rediscover herself, finding solace and a profound sense of purpose in the most unconventional of families and in the rhythms of a life far removed from her own expectations.
