Synopsis

When elderly Greek art dealer Georgis Mitropoulos dies, leaving behind a seemingly standard will, the initial calm quickly shatters. His lawyer, a respected member of the community, is found murdered, and Ellery Queen, attending the reading of the will, finds himself embroiled in a baffling double homicide. The plot thickens when it's discovered that the original will has vanished, replaced by an unsigned, hastily scrawled codicil found tucked inside a Greek coffin from Mitropoulos's collection. This cryptic document throws suspicion on every member of the family and staff, all of whom have secrets and motives. As Ellery meticulously unravels a tangled web of greed, deception, and hidden identities, he must navigate red herrings and conflicting testimonies, employing his signature logical deduction to piece together the true sequence of events. The investigation leads him through the seedy underbelly of the art world and the complex dynamics of a wealthy family, all converging on the ultimate question of who truly benefits from the deaths, and who possesses the cunning to execute such an intricate crime.
