Synopsis

In a not-so-distant future, John Brunner's "The Sheep Look Up" paints a harrowing portrait of Earth suffocating under unprecedented environmental collapse. The air is toxic, necessitating gas masks for survival; potable water is a luxury; and new diseases, birth defects, and an alarming infant mortality rate plague humanity. Amidst this ecological catastrophe, powerful corporations exploit the crisis for profit, battling over control of essential resources like clean air, water, and food, while an ineffectual and corrupt government struggles to maintain order. The narrative follows Austin Train, a reluctant environmentalist and figurehead, simultaneously pursued by a radical ecoterrorist group known as the "Trainites" who wish him to lead their violent revolution, a government determined to silence him, and a media ravenous for sensation. More than just a tale of survival, this novel serves as a chilling and prescient social and political commentary, exploring the dire consequences of unchecked industrialization and human apathy.

Critical Reception
