Synopsis

In the third installment of Fritz Leiber's seminal 'Lankhmar' series, "Swords in the Mist," the infamous antiheroes Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser find themselves navigating a world where times are lean and the lines between money and love blur. Growing weary of the gritty streets of Lankhmar, the duo seeks solace and adventure upon the high seas, only to discover that the ocean holds its own perils—and its own seductive queens. A sea king's curse and the allure of mythical goddesses pull them into new exploits. However, their journey to meet their enigmatic wizard employer, Ningauble, reveals a far greater danger. Our formidable swordsmen become unwilling pawns in a cosmic life-and-death chess game, with the entirety of Lankhmar as the board and its inhabitants as the pieces. As they grapple with themes of control over fate and the corrupting influence of civilization, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser must fight to survive in a grand, perilous tapestry woven from the dark corners of Nehwon, proving their enduring legend long before other fantasy sagas took hold.

Critical Reception

"A cornerstone of the sword and sorcery genre, this book—and the series it belongs to—is celebrated for its 'luminous magic' and solidified Fritz Leiber's status as a worldwide legend and the very coiner of the term 'Sword and Sorcery.'"
