Sabriel

Sabriel, an eighteen-year-old girl, has spent most of her life in the mundane world of Ancelstierre, safely separated from the magical and perilous Old Kingdom and its restless Dead. Her ordinary existence is shattered when a ghastly creature from beyond the Wall delivers a chilling message: her father, the Abhorsen—the unique necromancer responsible for binding and returning the Dead to their final rest—is trapped in Death by a powerful Free Magic entity. With the Royal Family gone, the balance of power is shifting, and the Dead are growing stronger, threatening to engulf the Old Kingdom.
