Synopsis

In the vibrant yet increasingly troubled Old Kingdom, Clariel, a spirited young woman with lineage connecting her to both the Abhorsen and the King, longs for a simple life. Her aspirations are shattered when her parents uproot her from her peaceful country home to the bustling city of Belisaere, intent on marrying her off to a notoriously cruel man. As if her personal plight isn't enough, Belisaere itself is besieged by an insidious Free Magic creature, and a dangerous conspiracy against the reclusive King Orrikan threatens to destabilize the entire realm. Drawn unwillingly into the city's intricate politics and the hunt for the malevolent entity, Clariel discovers a latent, formidable sorcery within herself. Yet, this newfound power is a double-edged sword, carrying profound dangers and tempting her with its raw might. As the threads of destiny tighten around her, Clariel must navigate unwanted betrothals, evade political machinations, and confront the corrupting influence of power to protect her world and define her own fate.
