Synopsis

In the desolate depths of a Shetland winter, a torrential landslide rips through a remote croft house, seemingly uninhabited. Inspector Jimmy Perez, attending the funeral of an old friend, witnesses the destruction firsthand. Amidst the wreckage, he discovers the body of a dark-haired woman, elegantly dressed in a red silk gown. Initially presumed a tragic victim of the landslide, the investigation takes a sinister turn when forensic evidence reveals she was already deceased before the natural disaster struck. Obsessed with uncovering her identity and the truth behind her presence in the isolated croft, Perez delves into a complex murder inquiry. He must navigate the close-knit, often secretive island community, peeling back layers of local folklore and hidden resentments to expose a killer lurking beneath the veneer of quiet island life, all while battling the harsh, unforgiving elements of the Shetland landscape.
