Synopsis

Set against the vibrant and volatile backdrop of 1919 New Orleans, Ray Celestin's "The Axeman's Jazz" plunges readers into a city gripped by fear and music. Inspired by a true story, the novel follows the hunt for a chilling serial killer known only as the Axeman, who targets Italian grocers and issues an eerie challenge: play jazz or risk becoming the next victim. The official investigation is led by the troubled Detective Lieutenant Michael Talbot, burdened by a secret and struggling for leads. Meanwhile, former detective Luca d’Andrea, now entangled with the mafia, pursues the killer with a personal urgency. The most unexpected sleuth is Ida, a sharp secretary at the Pinkerton Detective Agency, whose fascination with Sherlock Holmes leads her to a crucial clue. With her musician friend, the young Louis Armstrong, by her side, Ida ventures into dangerous territory. As these disparate paths converge, the hunt for the Axeman reveals the city's complex web of jazz, crime, and racial tension, leading to a gripping climax.
