Synopsis

In the Garden of Beasts plunges readers into the heart of Berlin in 1933, a pivotal year witnessing Adolf Hitler's rise to power. The narrative centers on William E. Dodd, America's first ambassador to Nazi Germany, a mild-mannered academic unexpectedly thrust into a world of burgeoning fascism. Alongside him is his vivacious daughter, Martha, initially captivated by the allure of the 'New Germany' and engaging in affairs with high-ranking Nazi officials. As the Dodd family navigates the increasingly volatile political landscape, they bear witness to the chilling transformation of a nation. What begins with subtle changes quickly escalates into disturbing acts of violence and oppression. Despite Ambassador Dodd's urgent, yet largely ignored, warnings to an indifferent U.S. State Department, the terrifying reality of Hitler's regime becomes undeniable. The illusion of a benign new order shatters with the brutal 'Night of the Long Knives' in 1934, firmly establishing Hitler's dictatorial grip and profoundly altering the lives and perceptions of the Dodd family.
