In a future where psychic abilities are commonplace, Glen Runciter runs a unique organization that employs 'inertials' – individuals capable of neutralizing telepathic and precognitive powers – to safeguard privacy. When Runciter and his hand-picked team, including the struggling technician Joe Chip, embark on a critical mission to the Moon to confront a rival psychic corporation, they are ambushed in a devastating explosion. While Runciter is believed dead, his employees back on Earth begin receiving baffling messages from him, alongside mysterious cans of a substance called 'Ubik.' As their reality progressively degrades, regressing through various technological eras and causing their bodies to decay, Joe and his colleagues grapple with the terrifying possibility that they are the ones who perished, trapped in a 'half-life' state within a futuristic moratorium. The boundaries between life, death, and illusion blur, forcing them into a desperate struggle to understand their predicament and the true nature of their existence, all while the elusive Ubik offers a flickering hope against their accelerating dissolution.
