Synopsis

In Patricia Cornwell's chilling forensic thriller "From Potter's Field," the brilliant medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta is drawn into a terrifying cat-and-mouse game with her most cunning and dangerous adversary yet. The novel opens with a perplexing scene in Central Park: a nude, unidentified woman propped against a fountain, devoid of any struggle, bearing the unmistakable signature of serial killer Temple Brooks Gault. Scarpetta, already on assignment with the FBI, finds herself in a desperate race against time. On Christmas morning, she is tasked with the harrowing job of identifying the victim, a seemingly impossible feat given the conflicting forensic clues. The horror intensifies as Gault claims another victim, demonstrating an uncanny ability to infiltrate even the most secure systems, including a top-secret FBI artificial-intelligence program developed by Scarpetta’s own niece, Lucy. Taunting messages from Gault escalate the psychological warfare, bringing the killer terrifyingly close to Scarpetta herself, forcing her to confront her deepest fears and the very limits of her expertise to stop a predator who seems to anticipate her every move.
