Synopsis

In an unsettling alternate 1949 England, eight years after a humiliating 'separate peace' with Hitler left Britain under the shadow of fascism, the powerful 'Farthing Set' convenes for a weekend party. This elite group, responsible for ushering in the pro-Nazi government, has unexpectedly invited the estranged Lucy Kahn and her Jewish husband, David. The fragile truce of the gathering shatters when Sir James Thirkie, a prominent figure, is found murdered, a yellow Star of David pinned to his chest. Lucy immediately grasps the sinister implication: her husband is being framed, a convenient scapegoat amidst parliamentary machinations to further restrict voting rights and fuel anti-Semitic sentiment. As Inspector Carmichael from Scotland Yard, a man with his own private sympathies for society's outcasts, delves into the layers of political intrigue and personal vendettas, he uncovers a conspiracy far more dangerous than a simple murder, threatening to expose the rot at the heart of this new, authoritarian Britain.

Critical Reception

"This novel is widely lauded as a stunningly powerful and prescient work, masterfully blending genre fiction with a chillingly insightful social commentary on the incremental slide into fascism."
