Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of late 1960s London, Hilary Mantel's "An Experiment in Love" plunges into the lives of three young women – Carmel McBain, Karina, and Julianne – as they escape the confines of their English countryside and begin university. Carmel, the introspective narrator, interweaves her present student life with poignant recollections of a challenging childhood and a complex, often fraught, relationship with her lifelong schoolmate, Karina. As these bright but initially naive women navigate the vibrant, tumultuous era following Chappaquiddick, they confront a whirlwind of new preoccupations: nascent feminism, political awakening, sexual freedom, and the stark realities of class and social expectations. Mantel masterfully explores the intricate pressures on women during this pivotal period, where the desire for independence clashes with deeply ingrained societal norms, ultimately leading to a 'pointless grotesque tragedy' that forces them to confront their own identities and the often-unseen forces shaping their destinies.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its sharp wit and profound psychological insight, "An Experiment in Love" solidified Hilary Mantel's reputation as a masterful chronicler of the female experience and a New York Times Notable Book of the Year."
