Synopsis

Catherine Moreland, a young Englishwoman, accompanies her academic husband, Andrew, to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for an eight-month posting. Initially intrigued by the exotic novelty, Catherine soon finds herself suffocated by the conservative society and the stark cultural differences. Isolated in her apartment on Ghazzah Street, where windows are curtained and interactions limited, she experiences profound loneliness and growing paranoia. The heat, the silence, and the veiled lives around her combine to create an oppressive atmosphere that blurs the line between reality and delusion. As she struggles to understand her neighbors and the enigmatic rules of her new environment, Catherine becomes convinced that something sinister is happening in the apartment above hers, or perhaps within her own mind. Hilary Mantel masterfully explores themes of alienation, cultural shock, gender roles, and the psychological toll of isolation, crafting a haunting narrative that questions perceptions of freedom and confinement.
