Synopsis

In the wake of a catastrophic hurricane that rips through southern Florida, the already peculiar landscape descends into a maelstrom of opportunistic chaos. As insurance fraudsters, amateur occultists, and cunning ex-convicts descend upon the disaster zone, the stage is set for Carl Hiaasen's signature brand of satirical mayhem. Caught in the bizarre whirlwind are Max and Bonnie Lamb, honeymooners whose well-laid Disney World plans are abruptly abandoned in favor of witnessing the raw, terrible devastation. Yet, their post-storm curiosity takes a perilous turn when Max inexplicably vanishes. Bonnie, a determined bride navigating a world gone mad, must then embark on an improbable, increasingly absurd search for her husband. Her only allies are a mysterious young man with a penchant for tranquilizer guns and a room adorned with human skulls, and her most unconventional clue comes in the form of a mischievous, runaway monkey. Hiaasen crafts a hysterically funny yet piercing narrative, exposing the ridiculousness of human nature and the untamed spirit of Florida in equal measure.

Critical Reception

"Hailed as a prime example of Carl Hiaasen's satirical brilliance, "Stormy Weather" remains a beloved and critically acclaimed work for its uproarious humor, biting social commentary, and vividly eccentric portrayal of post-disaster Florida."
