Synopsis

Ankh-Morpork's Night Watch is undergoing a radical transformation. Captain Sam Vimes, known for his cynical pragmatism and intimate knowledge of the city's underbelly, is set to retire and marry the formidable Lady Sybil Ramkin. His departure leaves a void just as the Watch embraces diversity with an influx of new recruits: the impossibly upright Corporal Carrot Ironfoundersson (technically human, raised by dwarves), the literal-minded dwarf Lance-constable Cuddy, the stone-skinned troll Lance-constable Detritus, and the enigmatic werewolf Lance-constable Angua. This unlikely band is thrust into action when a string of seemingly random, yet eerily precise, murders rocks the city. The weapon of choice is a mysterious, deadly 'gonne,' and the killings point to a conspiracy involving power, destiny, and the legends of lost kings. As Vimes is drawn back into the fray he desperately wants to leave, the new recruits must quickly learn the harsh realities of law enforcement in a city where rules are merely suggestions, all while confronting prejudice and their own evolving identities to unmask a killer before Ankh-Morpork descends into chaos.

Critical Reception

"Widely acclaimed for its sharp wit, poignant social commentary, and masterful blend of fantasy and police procedural, 'Men at Arms' is considered a quintessential entry in Pratchett's Discworld series and a highlight of satirical literature."
