Synopsis

Theo Decker's life is irrevocably altered at thirteen when a terrorist bombing at a New York art museum kills his beloved mother and leaves him orphaned. In the chaos, he impulsively steals a small, exquisite Dutch painting, Carel Fabritius's 'The Goldfinch.' This stolen masterpiece becomes his most cherished and dangerous secret, a talisman of both beauty and grief that binds him to his past. Drifting between an unstable childhood with a wealthy friend's family, a bohemian existence in Las Vegas with his estranged father, and eventually establishing himself as an antique dealer in New York, Theo navigates a complex world of loss, love, and loneliness. The painting, a constant presence in his life, draws him into the shadowy underworld of art forgery and crime, forcing him to confront the moral ambiguities of his actions and the profound weight of his choices, all while grappling with the enduring trauma of his mother's death.
