Synopsis

Glen Cook, the revered architect of Grimdark fantasy, returns to the grim and gritty world of the Black Company with 'Port of Shadows.' In this military fantasy adventure, the legendary mercenary band finds itself caught in the treacherous politics of The Lady's court, where their favored status has made them a target. Central to this precarious position is Croaker, the Company's chronicler, who bears the unique distinction of having entered and returned from The Lady's Tower unchanged—an act that has drawn the intense scrutiny of The Ten Who Were Taken, a council of powerful sorcerers. Now, Croaker and the Company are pressed into service, tasked with leveraging the formidable power of their newest recruit, Mischievous Rain, to quell a burgeoning rebel army. However, Croaker harbors deep mistrust for all of The Taken, particularly those who bear an uncanny resemblance to The Lady and her enigmatic sister, adding layers of suspicion and danger to an already perilous mission. As they navigate a landscape of ancient magic, brutal warfare, and hidden agendas, the Black Company must confront the dark consequences of their loyalties and the true cost of their survival.

Critical Reception

"As a seminal work within the Chronicles of the Black Company, 'Port of Shadows' further solidifies Glen Cook's legacy as the foundational voice of the Grimdark fantasy subgenre, celebrated for its unflinching realism and morally ambiguous characters."
