Synopsis

Set in a vibrant, Song Dynasty-inspired empire called Kitai, Guy Gavriel Kay's 'River of Stars' masterfully intertwines the destinies of two extraordinary individuals against a backdrop of escalating political turmoil and external threats. Ren Daiyan, a young man who rises from a brutal act of self-defense to become an outlaw and eventually a formidable military leader, navigates the shifting allegiances of the court as war looms from the north. Concurrently, Lin Shan, the brilliant and unconventional daughter of a scholar, finds her intellectual gifts both admired and resented in the imperial court. Her wit captivates the art-loving emperor, yet her position remains precarious. As the empire teeters on the brink, threatened by ambitious factions within and barbarians without, Ren and Shan are drawn into a maelstrom of power, betrayal, and sacrifice. Their intersecting paths illuminate the profound human costs of ambition and loyalty, all under the shimmering 'river of stars.'

Critical Reception

"Hailed as a major accomplishment from a master novelist, 'River of Stars' is often lauded as a 'Game of Thrones in China' for its intricate blend of historical fantasy, political intrigue, and richly drawn characters."
