Synopsis

Charles Arrowby, a celebrated and notoriously self-centered London stage director and playwright, decides to retreat from his glittering theatrical life to a secluded house on the Suffolk coast. His intention is to compose a memoir, primarily focusing on his defining, albeit complex, love affair with his former mentor, Clement Makin, and to casually entertain his long-suffering actress-mistress, Lizzie. However, his meticulously planned solitude is shattered by a series of unsettling events and unexpected arrivals, some seemingly dredged from his own past, others bordering on the spectral. As his memoir transforms into a vivid chronicle of these disruptions, Charles's carefully constructed world, and indeed his colossal ego, begin to unravel. The sea itself, vast and mysterious, mirrors the turbulent depths of his own psyche as old obsessions resurface, forcing him to confront the true nature of his relationships, his art, and his very identity. Iris Murdoch masterfully explores themes of memory, love, power, and self-deception in this Booker Prize-winning psychological drama.

Critical Reception
