Synopsis

In C. S. Harris's "Where Shadows Dance," the year is 1812, and Sebastian St. Cyr, an aristocratic sleuth, faces an unparalleled challenge when his friend, the anatomist Paul Gibson, uncovers a murder no one acknowledges. The victim, Mr. Alexander Ross, a promising figure at the Foreign Office, was officially deemed to have died of a weak heart. However, Gibson's illegal acquisition of Ross's cadaver reveals a telling stiletto wound, prompting him to turn to Sebastian for discreet investigation. What begins as a quest for justice for an apparently amiable young man quickly plunges Sebastian into a treacherous world of international espionage and diplomatic maneuvering. His search takes him from the opulent drawing rooms of St. James’s Palace to the tense embassies of Russia, the United States, and the Ottoman Empire. As Sebastian navigates a labyrinth of secrets, he discovers that truth is a rare commodity, and in this dangerous shadow play, nothing is as it seems, forcing him to confront powerful forces to uncover the real killer.
